The Bloodfin Tetra is a hearty fish, suitable for the community aquarium and novice aquarist. They are easy to maintain, and can even be kept in an unheated tank (though this is not recommended as their colors will fade). An active fish, the Bloodfins tend to spend most of their time swimming in the middle to upper areas of the tank - adding a good deal of "action" with little need for constant attention.
Determining the sex of a Bloodfin is realtively easy. The males have tiny hooks on the anal fin which are used during spawning. These hooks are prone to damage when netting, so be careful when netting these fish.
Breeding is an easy task as no changes in the enviroment are really necessary. The parents should simply be removed after spawning occurs as they are active egg eaters.
